The Challenge
Two Websites, One Decision, No Room for Guesswork
Acquiring a competitor is rarely just a legal and operational exercise — it usually leaves a business holding two websites, two sets of rankings, and two audiences who found them in different ways. In this case, the acquired business had spent years building strong regional visibility, a loyal base of returning search traffic, and a backlink profile tied closely to its original brand name and location.
The instinct in situations like this is often to redirect everything to the primary domain and move on. That approach is fast, but it's also the most common way acquisitions quietly destroy the SEO value they just paid for. A blanket domain-level redirect can dilute page relevance, break backlink equity that was never designed to point anywhere else, and — worst of all — cause a dip in leads at exactly the moment the newly combined business needs them most.
Services Provided
SEO Backlink Audit
A full audit of the acquired site's backlink profile — close to 500 referring links in total — assessing which carried genuine authority and which were tied so specifically to the legacy brand or location that they wouldn't transfer cleanly.
SEO Keyword Audit
A complete map of the keywords each domain ranked for, cross-referenced to flag overlap, cannibalisation risk, and the regional or service-specific terms that were unique to the acquired business and needed protecting.

Consolidation Strategy
Our Approach
Slow Down to Move Faster
Rather than treating this as a single migration event, we treated it as a sequencing problem. The backlink audit came first, because it's much harder to rebuild lost authority than to plan around it — across close to 500 referring links, we identified which pages on the acquired domain were carrying real link equity and made sure the consolidation plan routed that value to the most relevant equivalent page, not just the homepage.
The keyword audit ran in parallel, and this is where the regional nuance mattered most. Search visibility for the acquired business wasn't evenly spread — certain services and locations ranked strongly for the acquired brand and comparatively weakly for the acquiring one. Flattening the two keyword sets into a single strategy without accounting for that would have meant trading a strong ranking for a mediocre one.
SERP research then gave us a realistic picture of what "winning" would actually look like once the two businesses were operating as one — who the combined entity would really be competing against, region by region, once its search footprint changed shape.
The result was a consolidation strategy built around mapped, page-level redirects rather than a domain-wide sweep, a sequencing plan that avoided collapsing both ranking profiles into a single risky event, and a monitoring framework so the business could see the impact of each phase before committing to the next.
SEO Services for Merging Businesses...
The Impact: A Merger Handled on the Business's Terms
The client moved through the consolidation with a clear, risk-managed plan rather than a leap of faith:
Around 500 backlinks protected through mapped, page-level redirects rather than lost to a blanket domain-wide sweep
An estimated 2,500 organic visitors a year saved that a standard migration approach would likely have cost the business through ranking drops and broken link equity
Regional visibility maintained for the acquired business's strongest locations and services, rather than diluted into the primary domain's existing footprint
Lead flow sustained throughout the transition, with no interruption to enquiries during the switchover
Perhaps most importantly, the client avoided the single biggest mistake we see in post-acquisition SEO: assuming that combining two websites is a technical task rather than a strategic one. The backlink and traffic figures above reflect what a phased, audit-led approach protected — value that a faster, less considered migration would very likely have written off as an unavoidable cost of the merger.
