Squarespace to Shopify migration
Keep the polish of your Squarespace site and gain a platform built to sell.
Squarespace is lovely for a beautiful website with a small shop attached. As your range, your orders and your ambitions grow, many businesses look to Shopify for deeper ecommerce features and a bigger choice of apps. The catch is that Squarespace's exports leave gaps, especially around images and store pages. We plan your Squarespace to Shopify migration around those gaps, so your products, content and search visibility come across in good shape.
What moves across
Squarespace can export physical and service products to a CSV file, orders to a CSV and contacts to a CSV. That's a useful start, but the product export leaves out some details, including featured images, variant images, image alt text, extra product information and customer reviews. Squarespace also says images can't be exported in bulk, so they need gathering separately.
Your site content is exported as a WordPress-format XML file, which includes standard pages and one blog, but not store pages or product blocks. Shopify can't read that file directly, so pages and posts are rebuilt in your Shopify theme. At the time of writing, Shopify's own Store Migration app doesn't list Squarespace as a supported platform, so careful preparation does most of the work.

QUESTIONS
Straight answers for Squarespace store owners considering Shopify.
Not if the move is planned carefully. Squarespace and Shopify use different URL patterns, so product, page and blog addresses will change. We map each URL that has traffic or links to its Shopify equivalent and set up 301 redirects before launch. Shopify won't redirect some reserved paths, including URLs beginning /shop, so if your store page sits there we plan around it early.
Yes, but it takes some work. Squarespace's product export doesn't include featured images, variant images or image alt text, and Squarespace says images can't be exported in bulk. We gather the images, match them to the right products and variants in Shopify and add descriptive alt text, which is a good chance to improve image SEO too.
Yes. Squarespace exports one blog with its posts in a WordPress-format file. Shopify can't import that file directly, so we recreate your posts in Shopify's blog with their headings, images and links, then redirect each old address. If you run more than one blog on Squarespace, the extra blogs need moving separately.
Squarespace's product export covers physical and service products, so anything else is set up on Shopify by hand or with an app. Shopify handles gift cards itself, and digital downloads and bookings are usually managed with an app. We'll list everything you sell on Squarespace and agree the right approach for each type.
Customer details and mailing lists can be imported, but Shopify can't migrate passwords from another platform. With Shopify's newer customer accounts, shoppers sign in with a one-time code emailed to them, so there's no password to remember. If you use Squarespace member areas, we'll look at the best Shopify alternative with you.
For a small store, usually a few weeks from planning to launch. The amount of image and content work is often the biggest factor, followed by how much design you'd like. Your Squarespace site keeps trading while we build and test, and we switch over at a quiet time.
It depends on the size of your range, how much content needs moving and the design work involved. You'll find guide prices on our packages and pricing page and in our ecommerce website packages. We always give you an itemised quote before any work begins.

Tell us about your Squarespace site and shop, and we'll give you an honest view of what the move involves and what it will cost.
